June 2024 update by Wendy Boone

Each spring and fall the Charlie Boone Trails Memorial Foundation sets up a booth in Occoquan at their Riverfest and Craft Show. The following month, we will march in the Dale City 4th of July Parade. We hope to partner once more with NOVA BMX. It is always great fun as kids and adults zoom around us on their bikes as our float drives along.

Our team is continuing to work closely with Prince William County Parks and the Occoquan Supervisor's office. We are excited and optimistic about new plans and actions to be taken to get us moving forward in a huge way! We anticipate a lot happening in the coming weeks and we will be updating our blog to keep you informed as we move along.

But first, here are some fun things about this spring's Craft Show: Our booth was located in Conservation Alley along with a variety of organizations sharing, teaching and demonstrating many aspects of conservation. The activity was non-stop! Kids visited each booth to learn important things about conservation and get their Passports stamped. The Passports had descriptions of what each booth was teaching or demonstrating. It was very clever.

The thing the kids learned at our booth is that when they ride a bike or skateboard, they are using their own built-in energy and not energy from another source. They're not plugged in and dragging an extension cord. Also, they control their own on/off switch and their energy is limited only by what they themselves do.

In addition to the booths, there was a DJ providing music all weekend. Also, the talented students and teachers from Rockledge Elementary School's various music clubs entertained with singing and dancing, and playing keyboards, percussion instruments and guitars. It was fabulous to see these kids enjoying music and having so much fun performing!

There were a number of Prince William County organizations that impact us daily, such as emergency.pwcgov.org. The Water Service Authority refrigerator magnet tells about 18 tips for wise water use and kids learn why we need water and other important facts in H2GoKids.org activity books. Also sharing their valuable information were The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia Master Naturalists and Friends of the Occoquan. Did you know that there is a sailing school at Leesylvania Park? The Northern Virginia Sailing School teaches American Sailing Association certification courses. And my favorite thing that I especially enjoyed is meeting the Park Rangers who patrol our bike and skate park site!

Stay tuned for our next blog! As always, thank you for your support!
